Set mainly throughout the time span concurrent with the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, the musical, Les Misérables is the life story of Jean Valjean, a resident of Paris who was convicted for almost two decades because of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his release on parole, he escapes and looks for a second chance to live his life; he then adopts a different identity as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean face the consequences of his previous escape.

Transpiring over a duration of almost two decades across the musical's two acts, Valjean happens to be entangled in one way or another with several important figures in every part of Les Mis – Fantine is one of his factory employees who gives birth to an illegitimate child; Cosette is the adoptive daughter of Madeleine, who turns out to be Fantine’s daughter; Marius, a young Frenchman part of the rebellion and the destined love match of Cosette. Other roles shown in the musical include the Thénardiers, greedy innkeepers who think only of themselves and are engrossed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their child, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and members of the government opposition specifically Gavroche, a small but cunning orphan, and the rebellion’s leader, Enjolras.

This vibrant cast of characters entangled by serendipity and their unique tales are presented beautifully on a live platform, not just with the show's 19th century French-inspired outfit and set design, but principally with the musical being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With famous numbers such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its amazing song list, the musical is able to communicate the underlying motives beneath every character that comes to life in the theater.

The musical's next season will be in the exemplary BJCC Concert Hall in Birmingham, produced for a limited period on Wednesday 26th March 2025.
