Shakespeare’s original play has long been known as one of the saddest stories across multiple generations, with the main protagonists' zealous infatuation for each other leading to their death by their own hands. Utilizing Shakespeare and his wife as narrators in the play itself however, West End's modern musical, & Juliet, tweaks the previous story by allowing Juliet to discover what life has to offer after Shakespeare’s classic and focusing on her own coming-of-age story. Wishing to find new experiences with Juliet's equally-determined companions, the characters are launched into a bigger way of life beyond what they were ready for when they come to Paris, France.

Given that 400 years have passed since Romeo and Juliet, the new play also chose to apply execution that is more appropriate today. To drive its message across to the audience, the play showcases a slew of songs taken from pop music industry's top icon, Max Martin. The Swedish record producer already had a goal of immortalizing his songs through theater as well, resulting in ‘& Juliet’ being created and later on having its first run in 2019. Martin gave complete freedom in the manipulation of his numbers to the play, stating that he “wanted every song to feel like it was written for the musical, and to make fans feel that even if his songs are performed differently, you would completely follow everything.” The existing play now has the songs from chart-topping singers such as Celine Dion, Demi Lovato, P!nk, and Justin Timberlake, among others. Because of this, the musical was one of the first to gather a different and young generation to West End.
