The musical

Globally recognized for its signature jazz-influenced theme, mesmerizing choreography, and minimalist staging style which exhibits the spirit of vaudeville, the musical strongly criticizes the infatuation with celebrity culture.

The reimagined musical set in the Roaring Twenties, featuring music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, focuses on themes of corruption, crime, and the allure of fame. After being debuted on Broadway in 1975, the musical has received an enormous amount of positive and negative criticism, mainly for its thought-provoking message, and cultural impact.

The story

Like Michael Corleone from The Godfather who turned from an innocent, outsider to a legacy, power inheritor, Chicago is a journey through the stages an individual goes through to satisfy one's desire for fame and fortune.

The musical demonstrates how even felony can be a way for fame, highlighting the flaw in the justice system. The depicts how individuals shape themselves, and who they are to reach their ultimate selfish goal. The show became sensational initially for redefining the crime game and introducing new roles of "women" to the industry. The 1996 Broadway production kept the record as the second-longest-running American musical in Broadway history.

Chicago seeks to showcase the shallowness of fame, and the paradox between good deeds and status, that not all famous people are successful in the sense of morality. The show portrays various individuals each performing for their personal interest, and how they impact each other's lives, through different viewpoints.

The awards

The show has gained countless awards including the Tony Awards (1997), Drama Desk Awards (1997), Grammy Awards (1998), Academy Awards (2003), Golden Globe Awards (2003), BAFTA Awards (2003), and many others.
