Universally recognized for its signature jazz-influenced theme, mesmerizing choreography, and minimalist staging style which reflects the essence of vaudeville, the performance boldly criticizes the infatuation with celebrity culture.
The revamped musical set in the Roaring Twenties, featuring music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, focuses on themes of decadence, crime, and the seduction of fame. After being debuted on Broadway in 1975, the musical has received an enormous amount of positive and negative criticism, mainly for its provocative message, and cultural impact.
Similar to Michael Corleone from The Godfather who phased from an idealistic role to a ruthless and cunning leader, Chicago is a journey through the transformations an individual goes through to fulfill their desire for fame and fortune.
The performance illustrates how even felony can be a means for fame, highlighting the imperfection in the justice system. The depicts how individuals shape themselves, and their identities to reach their ultimate selfish goal. The show became groundbreaking initially for redefining the criminal game and introducing new roles of "women" to the sector. The 1996 Broadway production kept the record as the second-longest-running American musical in Broadway history.
Chicago tries to showcase the superficiality of fame, and the inconsistency between good deeds and status, that not all famous people are successful in the sense of morality. The show portrays various individuals each performing for their personal interest, and how they intersect with each other's lives, through different viewpoints.
The performance has gained numerous awards including the Tony Awards (1997), Drama Desk Awards (1997), Grammy Awards (1998), Academy Awards (2003), Golden Globe Awards (2003), BAFTA Awards (2003), and more.
