More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil prepared the original play screenplay for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s original novel of the matching name, the plot of Les Mis was modified and turned into a live stage adaptation performed as a fully sung-through show, which was an enormous achievement in that era.
After an initial showing in Paris, France, there was obviously great clamor to make an English show, and when Cameron Macikintosh discovered the soundtrack, he was so inspired and announced he was going to write an English adaptation hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the translated songs. The English version of Les Mis at first premiered with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its financial success and positive reviews from critics, the show rapidly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, London theatre's top theater, and was performed for close to two decades. Les Mis then transferred one more time to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until today. Counting all its tours since its first showing in 1980, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running musical of all time.
With almost 4 decades in London on its own and not even listing its shows in other locations, including and definitely not limited to its well-received Broadway seasons, it is undeniable that Les Misérables perseveres and is excellent in the eyes of the play's audiences. The plot and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings due to the evident heart behind the mask of each character and act performed. Les Mis has become so successful that the play has been adapted to films repeatedly and received very positively even on a different medium.
This upcoming March’s run of Les Mis brings it to Alabama, where the show will be running on Tuesday 25th March 2025, in BJCC Concert Hall, Birmingham.
